Only the uninhibited вЂTwist And ShoutвЂ™ really connected with music fans, including four young British musicians busy shaping their first LP at LondonвЂ™s Abbey Road Studios. The Isleys continued to build on that success, cutting further material for RCA, then for Wand, United Artists and Atlantic Records. They wanted us to have a complete musical education and they exposed us to everything, classical to country, standards to show tunes.вЂќ Ronald Isley вЂњ Our parents created the climate for us to learn about music when we were all very young.

RCA RecordsвЂ™ A&R man Howard Bloom suggested they put it on a disc, and when released as a single that August, вЂShoutвЂ™ became their first hit. In concert that summer at the Howard Theater in Washington, DC, the brothers sang вЂLonely TeardropsвЂ™ and extemporised a line (вЂњYou know you make me want to shoutвЂќ) for a gospel-charged climax that drove the audience wild. By 1959, the trio had developed a reputation for powerful live performances, and signed for booking with General Artists Corporation. Gordy composed that tune with Tyran Carlo this was the partnership behind several of Jackie WilsonвЂ™s biggest hits, including вЂLonely Teardrops.вЂ™ДЄnd it was an improvisation from вЂLonely TeardropsвЂ™ which gave the Isleys their breakthrough. Coincidentally, the last of these was where a young Detroit songwriter, Berry Gordy Jr., also placed his early work: вЂOoh ShucksвЂ™ by the Five Stars. In New York, the brothers hustled for the big time, recording for such independent companies as Teenage, Cindy and George GoldnerвЂ™s Gone and Mark-X imprints. In 1954, the fourth brother, Vernon, was killed in a car accident. As youngsters, the Isleys had grown up with gospel music, performing as a quartet in churches in Ohio and Kentucky. Aged 15, 17 and 18, respectively, they left their hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio, aboard a Greyhound bus, bound for New York. On April 17, 1956, Ronald, Rudolph and OвЂ™Kelly Isley made a career move. The IsleysвЂ™ story began innocently enough. The sensation is the same three years later when the Isleys deliver another message from hell вЂTwist And ShoutвЂ™ and a further five years on, when they record вЂGot To Have You BackвЂ™ in MotownвЂ™s Studio A in Detroit.ДЄnd in the late 1960s, when the Isleys finally became self-sufficient with their own successful record label, T-Neck, they continued to spread their deranged gospel with the likes of вЂItвЂ™s Your Thing.вЂ™ Of course, where thereвЂ™s a hit, thereвЂ™s also a writ, but more of that later. He sounds like a man twice his age, going over the edge and taking everyone else with him. The brothersвЂ™ first case for certification is вЂShout,вЂ™ cut in New York City when lead tenor Ronald Isley was merely 18. And thatвЂ™s why the Isleys cast a spell over a generation of rock & roll musicians worldwide. After several flops resulted in them being dropped from their record label, they found success again with sixties hits such as Гўв‚¬Е“Twist & ShoutГўв‚¬Вќ, later covered successfully by The Beatles and the Motown hit, Гўв‚¬Е“This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)Гўв‚¬Е“ in 19 respectively. Starting their careers in the gospel performing circuit in the early 1950s, they eventually crossed over to secular music first finding modest success in doo-wop until the release of their first million-selling hit, Гўв‚¬Е“ShoutГўв‚¬Вќ, in 1959. The founding members were OГўв‚¬в„ўKelly Isley, Jr., Rudolph Isley, Ronald Isley and Vernon Isley.
